REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- BRIN Climate and Atmosphere Researcher Erma Yulihastin said the floods that hit parts of Jakarta were triggered by extreme rains that fell as high as 157 millimeters.

“Floods in Kelapa Gading and north of Jakarta yesterday proved that Jakarta City's drainage capacity is already unable to accommodate 150 millimeters,” he said through an X account quoted in Jakarta on Friday (1/3/2024).

At the beginning of 2020, Erma said, Jakarta experienced a major flood due to the levee because it was unable to accommodate extreme forests of more than 300 millimeters.

According to him, currently rains with an intensity of 150 millimeters per day can already create floods due to the overflow of watersheds without any case of a dam that indicates a decrease in drainage capacity.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of DKI Jakarta revealed that flooding submerged at least 38 roads in Jakarta on Thursday (29/2/2024). The water height varies between 10 to 120 centimeters.

Floods quickly receded thanks to mobile water pumps and water pump houses used by BPBD DKI Jakarta officers. The Sentiong Water Pump House in North Jakarta operated by BPBD officers is able to flow water as much as 50 thousand liters per second.

BMKG Deputy Meteorological Officer Guswanto said Jakarta was among the areas that could potentially still experience the effects of extreme rain intensity such as flooding during the next week on March 1-8, 2024.

The extreme rain was triggered by several atmospheric phenomena, such as the Rossby Equatorial wave activity south of western Java in the period.
