REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Republika's Agent of Change 2013 is an annual award introduced by Republika since 2005 during Indonesian crisis. This year, it is given to five national figures, namely Iko Uwais (actor), Indra Sjafri (Coach of National football team), Gamal Albinsaid (founder of Garbage Clinical Insurance), Abraham Samad (Chairman of Corruption Eradication Commission) and Ridwan Hasan Saputra (Math teacher). Here are their short biographies.
1. IKO UWAIS
He rose to international stardom after starring in a film 'Merantau,' Gareth's 'The Raid: Serbuan Maut (The Raid: Redemption)' and 'The Raid 2: Berandal.' He will be awarded as Republika's Agent of Change 2014. All three films were successfully appeared in some international film festivals and got high attentions.
In the three films, Iko used martial arts called pencak silat, which he had been run since he was ten years. Thanks to his skill, he was considered by Keanu Reeves - Hollywood actor - to play together in a film 'Man of Tai Chi' in 2013. For his achievement, Iko managed to bring a change for Indonesia. Pencak silat was seen as an ancient martial arts and became popular among young generation.
2. INDRA SJAFRI
'Everything can be defeated, except God," Sjafri said to South Korean football team at the final of ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup 2013. This statement lighted up the spirit of National Team in October last year. Many people praised him, but many people also sneered him. Sjafri has proven his statement that Indonesia defeated South Korea with scores of 3-2. They were previously considering Sjafri as an arrogant coach began to change their minds and said that Sjafri was an optimistic figure. Sjafri is able to inspire the change in Indonesian football. He invites people to realize that we have a great nation and we must be optimistic people.
3. GAMAL ALBINSAID
He is a student in Brawijaya University, Malang. He has a high instinct to garbage. He brought Indonesia to international arena with new concept of Garbage Clinical Insurance. The young doctor has already helped more than 2,000 people in Indonesia gain access to medical support. He ever received a prestigious award from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace at the end of January 2013.
He explained that there was a pleasure in himself in garbage business. The cilinic brings luck for him. He believes that this business can raise the quality of life of lower class and give more benefits for everyday life.
4. RIDWAN HASAN SAPUTRA
He is a Match teacher coming from Bogor, West Java. He is successful to bring his students winning various math olympiads, both in Indonesia and abroad. He is not requiring specific tariff for his services. He only picked the money according to his student's ability.
In 2011, Saputra established Mathematics Education Center and started the operation in 2003. By using the Nalaria Realistic Mathematics (MNR) approach, he teaches many mathematics issues in day to day learning. He boosted children's achievement in winning various olympiad games.
5. ABRAHAM SAMAD
Chairman of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) encourages young generation to continue t make a change for Indonesia. The fate brought Samad to join KPK. The goal is only one, he wants to contribute to eradicate corruption in Indonesia. On December 2, 2011 he became the chairman.
Together with four other leaders, Samad brings KPK to move more progressive. He has arranged a road map for five years. Major cases began to unfold, such as Hambalang case, Bank Century case, driving simulator procurement scandal and corruption cases that drag family of Banten governor.
